The Staple Singers began as a gospel group in the 1950’s, but later expanded their sound to include soul and R&B.The group consisted of patriarch Roebuck ‘Pops” Staples, and his children Cleotha, Pervis,Yvonne, and Mavis.
They were known for their socially conscious lyrics and their collaborations with contemporary musicians such as Curtis Mayfield, Prince and others. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 1999. Mavis Staples was inducted into The Gospel Mucic Hall of Fame in 2018.
This video of The Staple Singers, singing “We The People”, exemplifies that this country formulated two founding documents that represent what America should be.
The Constitution of the United States states; “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense,…” and The Declaration Of Independence, states; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness….” Let us all pursue “The American Dream.”
